You leave the vault with the sole reason being: find your father. You learn that your mother died during child birth and that your father left the vault. You grow up in a vault throughout your childhood, making connections and friends with the people down there. If you want to avoid Fallout 4 spoilers, do not look at the blurred out text in the Fallout 4 section and probably avoid the comments altogether.
